Readying Illinois Students for Excellence
Readying Illinois Students for Excellence (RISE) is a FREE program for select first-year students, so that they may register for Fall courses, gain leadership skills, and locate valuable resources about where to go for help, advice, and fun at Illinois. But don't take our word for it.
RISE participants will also:
- Learn how to talk with your faculty both in and out of the classroom.
- Gain skills to balance academics, extra-curricular involvement and friendships while on campus.
- Meet student leaders and other new students at Illinois.
- Parents will learn how to assist you in the transition and hear about various campus resources.
RISE 2017 is being held:
- Saturday, June 3 – Monday, June 5, 2017
- Monday, June 19 – Wednesday, June 20, 2017
RISE is a collaboration between the Office of the Dean of Students - New Student Programs, Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations, and Office of the Provost.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is RISE?
RISE is a 3 day FREE orientation and registration program designed to assist incoming students attending Illinois in their transition to campus. Students attend their summer registration program, after an expanded opportunity to learn more about college and the University of Illinois. RISE provides leadership opportunities, knowledge of campus resources, connections to faculty and staff and connections to other students.
- How do people hear about RISE?
Select students will have RISE listed as an option in their Summer Registration program. Included in this list are first-generation college students, Pell Grant eligible students, and underrepresented students.
- If I come to RISE where will I be staying?
All participants will stay in Weston Hall (204 E. Peabody Champaign, IL 61820). All rooms are air-conditioned and have new furniture. You will be provided with a pillow, mattress, blanket, towels, wash cloths, toilet paper and linens for your bed. Please bring your own soap products and personal items for your stay.
- Is there transportation included in this program?
Buses to and from Chicago are available on a limited basis to students from Chicago who attend the second session. Unfortunately, we are not otherwise able to provide transportation for RISE. If you are unable to drive to campus, we encourage you to research local public transportation.
- What should I pack?
After you sign up for RISE, you will receive an e-mail from the RISE coordinators with a packing list. We will ask that you bring one business casual outfit for our certificate program at the end of the experience.
- What rules will there be for the program?
Every participant will be held to the University Code of Conduct. This is a drug-free/alcohol-free program. Any student found to be in possession or participating in any consumption of alcohol or non-prescribed drugs will be expelled from the program immediately. The participant found in violation will be evicted from the residence hall immediately.
- What will my parent(s) and family do while I’m at RISE?
Your parent(s) and family are encouraged to come to Parent Orientation with the Summer Registration program. They will learn about campus resources and how to assist you through the transition to Illinois. We do not provide overnight accommodations for parents or guests.
