What is G.R.I.T. Camp?

G.R.I.T. (Guiding Resilient Transfer Students) Camp is a free program designed by your Illinois Transfer Ambassadors and funded by the Office of New Student Programs. This three-day, two-night trip is intended for incoming transfer students and serves as a means for transfer students to build community, learn about the university, gain personal skills, and of course have fun!

When is G.R.I.T. Camp?

The dates for G.R.I.T. Camp are September 16th-18th. Students should start checking in around 3:45PM on Friday, September 16th. Once the program is over, we will arrive back on campus on Sunday, September 18th around 12:30PM.

Where is G.R.I.T. Camp taking place?

The camp will be held at Camp Manitoqua & Retreat Center in Frankfort, Illinois, around two hours away from campus. Students will be transported by a bus, as reserved by New Student Programs.

Are there any costs associated with attending G.R.I.T. Camp?

No, the entire G.R.I.T. Camp program is free for incoming transfer students who sign up!

What are the sleeping arrangements?

Sleeping arrangements will be the camp’s cabins, which allow for 15 students per cabin (NOT co-ed). There will be 1-2 Illinois Transfer Ambassadors per cabin with the students. Students must bring their own sleeping bags/bedding.

What about food?

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided to all students through the Camp Manitoqua & Retreat Center dining halls. Students will be fed prior to leaving for camp. Students should bring additional snacks and water for themselves in case they are hungry between meals, though we will provide some snacks as part of the camp (s’mores anyone?).

How many students will be attending G.R.I.T. Camp?

The number of students to attend G.R.I.T. Camp is to be determined, as per student sign-up. The maximum number of students to attend is 60, so make sure to secure your spot now!

What types of activities will we be doing at G.R.I.T. Camp?

Activities will range from team-building to fun-filled activities. You will get the opportunity to form close bonds with your camp group, meet other transfers from your specific college, and get to know your Illinois Transfer Ambassadors. We hope to see you at G.R.I.T Camp!

Packing List

We are excited that you will join us for the G.R.I.T Camp Retreat from 9/16 to 9/18! This packing list is to help you with necessary items you will need to maximize this 2 days & 2 overnights camp experience.

At the camp, we will provide bed with no bedding so please bring your own sleeping bag/pillow. Each cabin will host 15 people of the same gender and in triple high bunks. Shower gear is also necessary if you choose to shower at the central bathhouse on the camp. Please maintain good personal hygiene on the camp ground.
