International Student Orientation
New Student Programs and International Student and Scholar Services works together to create an orientation in August.
Orientation Overview & Schedule
International Orientation is a four day program that helps incoming undergraduate international students connect with campus, learn more about the U of I campus culture, and meet other international and domestic students.
This program is geared for degree seeking students, if you are a study abroad student, you will have a separate orientation program through that office.
Incoming new international students will be divided up into small groups of 10 to 15 with an Orientation Leader. These current students will help the new students navigate the ISSS check-in, McKinley Health Center check-in, and learn about living in central Illinois.
Pre-Arrival / Check-In
All international students are required to check-in with the university. The International Student and Scholar Services office manages this process. Get more information on this process »
Please Note: If you are going to attend our orientation program, we will assist you in completing this process.
It is crucial to read all University correspondence prior to arrival. You will be given specific instructions and guidance from various units on campus such as Undergraduate or Graduate Admissions Offices, your College and/or Department and the Office of International Student & Scholar Services. Please visit the ISSS Pre-Arrival webpage to make sure you have completed all the needed tasks.
Campus Housing / Early Move-In
Our program is free for all students to participate in, BUT if you choose to move into your housing assignment early, there will be a charge. We highly encourage you to move into your assignment early to get acclimated to your community. Also, if you live in University Residences, you will have a meal plan for those few days. Following are some helpful links about other programs and services U of I provides.
Illinois International refers to the multifaceted nature of internationalization at Illinois and encompasses a range of international activities, assets, and linkages. While the Illinois International site is maintained by the Office of International Programs & Studies (IPS), its scope is far broader than any one unit, serving as a portal to a variety of international-related information and resources housed in units and departments across campus. The senior international officer on the UI campus is Dr. Reitumetse Obakeng Mabokela, Vice Provost for International Affairs and Global Strategies.
ISSS is committed to providing culturally sensitive services of the highest quality. We strive to create an environment that is conducive to a successful educational, personal, and professional experience. We serve our international population and campus units through advising, immigration services, programming, advocacy, and outreach.
Parent & Family Programs
As part of our schedule, we will be providing a session for just parents and family members of our new incoming students. If you are going to be joining us on campus, please plan on joining us for the parent program. More information on the program will be posted over the summer.
Please visit Illinois Student and Scholar Services for more parent resources.
