Process for Recognition of Social Fraternity/Sorority
This page will help you proceed with efforts to begin a social fraternity/sorority on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) campus. A social fraternity/sorority is defined as a registered organization whose primary purpose is the personal development of their members as distinguished from departmental, honorary, service or professional fraternities/sororities.
Step One: Meet with the Office of the Dean of Students (Fraternity and Sorority Affairs)
Representative: Ashley Dye, Assistant Dean of Students for Fraternity and Sorority Affairs
Contact Information: 217-333-7062 or adye@uiuc.edu
During this meeting Fraternity and Sorority Affairs will assist you in clarifying your role as an organization to ensure your status as a social fraternity/sorority. In addition, they will connect you to the presidents of one of the four Greek Community Governing Councils:
- Black Greek Council: historically African-American Fraternities and Sororities
- Interfraternity Council: co-educational and male fraternities
- Panhellenic Council: female fraternities and sororities
- United Greek Council: fraternities and sororities with a multi/cultural identity focus
Fraternity and Sorority Affairs will help you determine which council would best serve the needs of your organization.
If you are an international or national fraternity, the process for becoming a colony of your organization will also be addressed.
Step Two: Meet with Council President
In order to be a registered social fraternity/sorority on the UIUC campus, you must be recognized by a council. Each council has specific guidelines that they have adopted in order to allow new organizations to join. During this meeting, the president will assist you in understanding these guidelines. Documentation of this meeting should be provided to the Assistant Dean of Students for Registered Organizations in the form of an email or letter.
You must be engaged in the process of becoming a member of that governing council. With each council having different guidelines, these will be taken into account as you seek to gain registered organization status.
Step Three: Meet with Assistant Director, Office of Registered Organizations
At this time, you are permitted to become a student organization. Five students, a president, treasurer, and three authorized agents are required to gain registered status. To complete the process, contact Amy Sponsler at 244-2357, or email her at sponsler@illinois.edu
Step Four: Complete the process of being recognized by the governing council.
Documentation that this is underway will be needed to maintain Registered Organization status. Failure to complete the respective council process will result in suspension of being a registered organization.
Step Five: Maintain standards of respective council and Registered Organization Office.
Failure to do either can result in not being recognized as a student organization. Each council has their own guidelines for maintaining good standing. Should you fail to do this and are removed from the council then you will not have registered organization status.
